The theme for the 15th Annual Conference for Direct Care Workers was Hearts At Work.  This was the fifth year for Care for Elders to co-sponsor the conference for direct care workers.  The conference is intended for individuals who provide direct, hands-on care to older adults including Certified Nurse Assistants (CNAs), Home Health Aides, Personal and Home Care Assistants, Activity Assistants and other para-professionals in direct care roles.  The conference was held on March 21, 2012 at the University of Houston Hilton Hotel.  There were 149 direct care workers that attended the conference, representing 32 agencies.  Almost half of the participants were attending the conference for their first time.

The conference was featured in the Direct Care Alliance's blog.  To read the blog entry, go to http://blog.directcarealliance.org/2012/04/houston-partnership-honors-educates-direct-care-workers/

This annual educational conference provides opportunity for individuals who provide direct, hands-on care to older adults to participate in workshops, develop new skills and share their experiences with others in the field.  The conference is intended to:

  • Improve workers' knowledge of the needs of older adults.
  • Improve workers' skills in providing safe and comprehensive care to older adults.
  • Create opportunity for workers to network, share experiences and learn from each other.
  • Recognize the significant contributions these workers make to improve the lives of older adults in our community.
  • Equip workers with techniques and tools that enhance interpersonal communication.
  • Provide opportunities for personal development and growth.
  • Energize workers with a renewed sense of commitment to their work.
  • Empower workers to advocate for "what they need" from their employers and the systems in which they work.
