On Monday, April 22, 2013, Care for Elders in partnership with the Harris County Area Agency on Aging and the United Way of Greater Houston sponsored the Spring 2013 Direct Care Workers Conference. The conference was held at the United Way of Greater Houston, and there were 103 direct care workers that attended the conference, representing 19 agencies. This was the sixth year for Care for Elders to co-sponsor the conference for direct care workers. This half day educational conference recognizes the important work that direct care workers do to help older adults maintain their independence and dignity. “Their service and dedication is exemplary and their role in enhancing the lives of others is a critical aspect of improving the quality of life of older adults” said Lynda Collins, chair of the Care for Elders Leadership Council.
The conference provides opportunity for individuals who provide direct, hands-on care to older adults to participate in workshops, gain knowledge, develop new skills, and network with colleagues. The keynote offered the participants a hilarious start to the day with a laughter yoga session, which was followed by educational sessions on late-life anxiety, dementia, aging trends, professional boundaries in a formal setting, and Parkinson’s disease. Care for Elders recognized six individuals who were nominated for the 2013 Direct Care Worker of the Year Award. The award recipient was Vivian Walker from Sheltering Arms Senior Services/ NCI. Special thanks to the conference planning committee and all of our partners that helped make the conference a huge success.
The next half day conference this year will be on Monday, August 12, 2013 at the United Way of Greater Houston.
