FULL PARTNERSHIP MEETING

Many thanks to all of you who attended the Full Partnership meeting on September 18th.  It was nearly "standing room only" - and what a testament to our belief in partnership and our commitment to the older adults of this community

For those who could not join us, here are some highlights of what you missed:

  • A celebration of awards, grants, and the invaluable contributions of many.  Mr. Raul Navarro, along with his wife Natalia, members of the Consumer Advisory Council, received special recognition for their tireless support of CFE and our advocacy efforts.
  • Jane presented on overview of the partnership's recent accomplishments and future plans.  More for a copy of her hand-out.
  • Rayanne Darensbourg and Sheila Savannah, with the Dept. of Health and Human Services for the City, presented an overview of the Aging Agenda being developed by the Dept. and its partners, including CFE.  Work groups are being formed and your expertise is needed.  Contact Rayanne at rayanne.darensbourg@cityofhouston.net  for more information.
  • Raphael Bemporad with BBMG did a masterful presentation about the communications work they've done with CFE.  He presented our new logo, tagline, and website.  Please go to www.careforelders.org and let us know what you think!

PARTNERS IN THE NEWS

Congratulations to Rogene Gee Calvert for receiving the Community Leadership Award from the Asia Houston Network.  A native Houstonian of Chinese descent, Rogene Gee Calvert has dedicated much of her life's work to serving the Asian-American community. She is founding president of the Houston 80-20 Asian American Political Action Committee, a group that mobilizes Asian-Americans to participate in the political process through voter education and bloc voting.  She currently serves in Mayor White's administration as director of Personnel and Volunteer Initiatives Program.  In addition, Rogene is a member of Care for Elders Governing Council.

The Houston Community College of Continuing Education was one of twelve community colleges nationwide to receive a grant for development of an innovative in-home caregiver training program. Expanding on their previously developed nurse aide training program, the Quality Home Caregiving course will be developed to promote skill development, advanced quality of care and opportunities for career advancement. The program will feature two unique courses: the At-Home Caregiver class for family and friends and the Home Care Attendant class for direct-care workers. The curriculum for the Home Care Attendant course was adopted from Care for Elders 16 hour training which was piloted with five local home care agencies.  MORE
