On September 27-28, 2013, Care for Elders was pleased to co-host the Houston Voices Institute Leadership Program with Direct Care Alliance. Direct care workers gathered for a two-day training to enhance their personal and professional development through the interactive teaching of Direct Care Alliance.
Texas House Representative District 147, Garnet F. Coleman, spoke to the group during one session about advocacy. He emphasized that each direct care worker has power to advocate on behalf of the profession and their clients through making telephone calls and visits with their elected officials.
Direct care workers play a hands-on role in the care for the elderly and disabled making it possible for individuals to live meaningful lives in their homes and communities and remain connected to their families.
The program would not have been possible without The Area Agency on Aging of Harris County and the United Way for their funding and meeting room space to make this event an absolute success.
