The Adopt-A-Senior Housing Community program promotes a coordinated response to older adults residing in senior housing communities in Houston/Harris County, when a federal disaster or crisis response has been declared. For the purpose of this project, a Senior Housing Community is defined as a community for persons sixty-two (62) years of age or older, and/or adults over the age of eighteen (18) with a disability. These communities must be apartments, townhouses or high-rises. There are many housing communities available to persons fifty-five (55) years of age or older; these communities can be adopted if a community requests to be included in the program. As a participant of the Adopt-A-Senior Housing Community program we will be there to help senior housing communities navigate through the system to quickly find the resources for the older adults impacted by a disaster that live in the community. The Adopt-A-Senior Housing Community program has been integrated into the Harris County Annex O disaster response plan. This formal relationship allows volunteers and others working with us to have direct access to resources and County officials running the disaster operation. It is our goal that by working collaboratively with senior housing communities, older adults will be better prepared and protected in disasters of all kinds.
